Chinese New Year 2025 - A Filipino Perspective
The Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year is celebrated vigorously and with great importance not just in China, but across the globe. In the Philippines, which has a deeply rooted history with Chinese culture, many of the Filipinos cherish the celebrations. But why?
The answer is rooted in cross-cultural interactions that happened overtime. The Philippines has a significant Chinese-Filipino population that has immensely contributed to the country’s socio-economic growth. Intermarriage and cross cultural movements have created a distinct Filipino ethnicity that has both Chinese and native features.
Filipino-Chinese communities in the Philippines celebrate Lunar New Year every year in hope of attracting prosperity, closer family ties and peace. Most Filipino-Chinese families usually clean their homes thoroughly, prepare lucky money in red envelopes, serve sweet foods and display various food and fruits on a table, which is believed to invite good fortune. People also participate in parades and dragon dances that are organized in China Towns in different cities in the Philippines.
